A tone guide is the document that turns a chatter into an extension of the creator rather than a stranger with account access. Without one, the chatter guesses at voice, sets their own limits on what to say, and makes decisions the creator never approved. With a good one, the creator stays in control of every conversation even when they're not the one having it.
This is the process Intima uses when onboarding a new creator. We build the tone guide before the trial starts. Nothing goes live until the creator has approved it.
What a tone guide is not
A tone guide is not a script. Scripts make conversations feel scripted. Fans notice. A tone guide sets the parameters inside which a chatter operates: the vocabulary, the personality, the limits, the escalation rules. The chatter still writes real responses in real-time. The tone guide just makes sure those responses sound like the creator.
Section 1: Voice and personality
Start with 3 to 5 adjectives that describe how the creator communicates. Then add 5 to 10 example messages the creator has actually sent in DMs. Real examples are more useful than descriptions.
The chatter should be able to read the examples and immediately recognize the patterns: how long the messages typically are, whether the creator uses full sentences or fragments, how formal or casual the language is, how often they use endearments, and whether they ask questions or make statements.
Include one list of words and phrases the creator uses often, and one list of words and phrases they never use. Both lists are equally important.
Section 2: Hard limits
This is the most important section. Hard limits are things the chatter will never say or do, regardless of what a fan requests. They are not negotiable and do not require judgment. Every limit in this section should be specific:
- Content types the creator does not make under any circumstances
- Topics the creator does not discuss (family, relationships, location, real name)
- Offers the creator does not make (meetups, calls, anything that implies in-person access)
- Prices the creator does not go below
- Platforms the creator does not redirect fans to outside OnlyFans
A hard limit that says "no explicit description of [specific act]" is more useful than one that says "keep it professional." Specific limits leave no room for misinterpretation.
Section 3: PPV approach
How does the creator approach selling PPV in conversation? What's the typical price range by content type? How do they introduce a PPV offer into a conversation without making it feel like a sales pitch?
Include example PPV setup messages. Include the price points the creator uses. Include what to say if a fan says the price is too high, and what the minimum acceptable price is.
Section 4: How to handle direct questions
There are three questions a fan might ask that require a pre-agreed answer:
- "Is this really you or is someone else chatting?"
- "Can we meet / can I call you?"
- "Are you using AI?"
The creator decides in advance what the chatter says to each of these. The answer should be honest enough to maintain trust and consistent with the creator's own approach to these questions. The chatter should never improvise on any of them.
Section 5: Fan notes
A good tone guide is supplemented by fan-specific notes. High-value or active fans should have a brief profile: what they buy, how they communicate, what they've requested before, what limits they've hit. This turns generic chatting into genuinely personalized conversations at scale.
At Intima, we maintain fan notes for every active fan on each creator account. The tone guide sets the parameters. The fan notes personalize the execution.
How long it takes to build a tone guide
A good tone guide takes a few hours to build properly. It requires the creator to provide example messages, answer questions about their limits and preferences, and review the draft before anything goes live. At Intima, this happens in the onboarding week before the trial starts. See how to choose an OnlyFans chatting agency for what the full onboarding process should look like.
