A fan who let their subscription lapse has already proven they were willing to pay. That makes them a better prospect for re-subscription than a cold subscriber who has never bought from you. Most creators never reach out to lapsed fans. The ones who do get a percentage back, and that percentage adds up.
This guide covers who to reach out to, when, what to say, and how to offer re-entry in a way that doesn't feel desperate.

Who to reach out to
Not every lapsed subscriber is worth a win-back message. Target:
- Subscribers who were active for more than 2 months before lapsing
- Subscribers who bought at least one PPV during their subscription
- Subscribers who interacted (replied to messages, left comments) rather than just passively subscribed
A fan who subscribed for 2 weeks and never engaged is unlikely to convert with a win-back message. A fan who was engaged for 4 months and bought regularly is a real opportunity.
When to reach out
Message within 7 to 14 days of the subscription expiring. After that window, the further away they are from their last experience with you, the less likely they are to re-subscribe. Wait too long and the message lands as a surprise from someone they'd half-forgotten.
What to say
A win-back message should not mention the subscription expiry directly. That signals you noticed they left, which is slightly awkward. Instead, lead with something new or something they specifically liked before.
Example win-back message: "Hey, haven't talked in a while. I've been shooting some stuff lately that I think you'd actually really enjoy based on what you were into before. Wanted to reach out before I put it up. Miss having you around."
What works about this: it references their specific interests (even vaguely), it creates a little urgency ("before I put it up"), and it's warm without being needy. What it doesn't do: mention that their subscription lapsed, offer a discount unprompted, or beg.
The re-entry offer
If they respond positively, offer a re-entry deal. A discount on the first month back, a free PPV with re-subscription, or a piece of exclusive content only available to returning fans. Frame it as a reward for coming back, not a discount because you need the money.
Example offer: "If you want to come back, I'll include [specific PPV or content] as a welcome back thing. It's something I haven't put up publicly."
The exclusivity matters more than the price. A fan who came back for something they can't get elsewhere is more likely to stay than one who came back for 20% off.
What not to say
- Do not mention that their subscription expired or that you noticed they left
- Do not offer a discount as the first thing in the message
- Do not send the same message to every lapsed subscriber
- Do not send more than one win-back message if they don't reply
